When Tom Donkor was introduced to LIGHT International founder, Darren Davis, in 1998 it didn’t just spark a friendship – it birthed a church.

Tom, who is originally from Ghana, West Africa, is now Pastor of Higher Heights International Church in Tampa, Florida – a church which shares LIGHT International’s vision of intimacy, purpose and evangelism.

“We don’t just have Americans around us, we also have people from Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Haiti and the Caribbean,” said Tom, previously a Pastor at Asokwa Baptist Church in Kumasi, Ghana. “And we want to gather these people, train and equip them to take the Gospel back to their nations or communities and plant churches.”

Higher Heights is part of the LIGHT family and vision, and as a church, submits to the LIGHT International’s leadership training, counseling and prayer covering. Higher Heights has also embraced the Harbour Church model to reach the Tampa Bay area with the Gospel. They currently have two home fellowship groups which meet regularly, in addition to weekly prayer vigils, leadership training sessions, evangelism education, outreach activities and fellowship. The church also leads mission trips to Africa, with hopes to eventually be able to reach the Caribbean too.

“We really want to be the hands, feet and voices of Christ,” said Tom. “We want to take care of the poor, the widows, the homeless; we want to reach the business people; we want to reach people wherever they are in life and empower them in every area so they can empower others.”

While they are currently based in Tampa, Tom, along with wife Cynthia and children, Aretha, Jesse, Jessilyn and Debbie, hope to plant churches with the same vision in the surrounding communities of Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Brandon.

“I truly believe LIGHT International is on the cutting edge of evangelism,” he said. “And I am really excited to be a part of what God is accomplishing on the earth through them.”
